You might imagine that thieves and intruders stalk the streets in the dark of the night. Contrary to popular belief, most burglaries occur during the day time between 10 AM and 3PM. Here are the most common 6 things that are targets or deterrents for any criminal activity:
1. Someone Home
Perhaps the first thing that intruders look out for, a vacant house. They don’t want to be caught and a vacant house means no one is there to stop them.
2. Cameras
CCTV is a top deterrent for any crime. Burglars see a camera and most decide it is not worth the risk of getting caught.
3. Proximity Sensors
One of the higher technology deterrents, this is a big warning sign that this property is well protected and too difficult to break into. The smart software can detect any movement and are highly reliable.
4. Neighbours
Sometimes a nosy neighbour is a good neighbour. Close knit communities look out for each other and keep an eye on each others homes. Even better, having a trusted neighbour pop in and check everything is okay when you are away is a sure way to discourage any suspicious activity.
5. Easy Entry Points & Broken Windows
If doors or windows look flimsy or broken, that’s basically an invitation for an intruder. This means an easy way in and an easy way out.
6. Cat/Dog flap.
This might not be an obvious one, but you’d be surprised what criminals can do these days. Thieves can use long, hook-ended objects, or sometimes just their arms, to get through cat flaps and get the keys to the house or car keys, that are in the door or nearby. Some thieves have also been known to use children who are able to fit through these small spaces.
Extra Tips:
- Put up a “Beware of Dog” sign, even if you don’t have a dog.
- When moving into a new house, change the locks straight away.
- Having a ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ sign clearly displayed on your house to show you’re part of a community!
